After harpooning a Bowhead Whale, two men from the village of Kaktovik in Alaska, USA start to make cuts in the blubber, the first steps in the butchering technique of a marine mammal of this size. The tradition of harpooning Bowhead Whales has taken place for hundreds of years and the people from the village of Kaktovik, believe the killing of these majestic marine mammals is part of their culture and should continue to be allowed.
In the backdrop, a beautiful sunset of a mixture of soft hues decorates the sky with a single yellow streak where the sun is ready to set. The sunset colors over the Arctic Ocean are stunning, but the sight of the butchering of a Bowhead Whale is not a pleasant one.
An Inupiat man from the Village of Kaktovik makes the first cuts at sunset, in a 45 foot bowhead whale captured in the traditional method by harpoon from a small open boat.
