A Boreal Owl sits peacefully on a branch scattered with snow in the Nenana River Canyon near Denali National Park in Alaska, USA while scanning the ground for food. When hunting, the Boreal Owl will move its head slowly from side to side listening for sounds of potential food.
While hunting for food, the Boreal Owl perches on low branches or tree trunks until the prey is found and then swoops down on it. Voles are one of their favorite types of food along with lemmings, shrews, mice and moles with the occasional bird, squirrel, bat, frog or beetle being part of their diet.
Throughout North America, this owl is known as the Boreal named after the Greek god of the north wind, Boreas, but in other regions across the world, this owl is called the Tengmalms. These birds are generally uncommon to rare and are considered endangered in some areas.
The Boreal Owl is a small species growing to be about 22-27 centimeters long and having a wingspan of between 50-62 centimeters.
