The blue hues on the face of the LeConte Glacier in Tongass National Forest in Alaska, USA is a very prominent feature due to the condensed ice. On a summer day, the lighting shines off the face of the glacier giving it that extra glisten as small icebergs float aimlessly around the surface at the water's edge.
The LeConte Glacier is an active tidewater glacier which is 34 kilometers in length, 1.6 kilometers wide and flows southwest to the head of LeConte Bay. The glacier has retreated approximately 4 kilometers since it was first found in 1887, but today, it appears to have slowed down considerably and remains in a fairly stable place.
Many of the icebergs which calf from the LeConte Glacier do so beneath the surface of the water and will shoot upwards creating quite a fascinating sight. Natural light absorption creates the blue color in this glacier along with there being no apparent sign of air bubbles.
