Two American Black Bear cubs have recently been allowed out of their den and have been beckoned by their mother to head towards safety by climbing up a tree in Yellowstone National Park.
Most Black Bear cubs are born in January or February weighing between 10-14 ounces, totally helpless as they are blind and bald. The mother nurses the cubs, and when Spring arrives, they now weigh between 4-8 pounds and are ready to venture out of their dens. The cubs are curious, playful and ready to explore their new world and climbing a tree is something they learn quickly.
By the end of Summer, the cubs are weaned and their mother will teach them all she knows about survival. By the following summer, these cubs will have grown and will be set free into the wilderness on their own.
