A Black Bear cub climbs near the top of a tree in Yellowstone National Park to keep himself out of danger while waiting for the return of its mother. The tree is laden with snow and as the cub climbs, the branches sway, dusting the fur on the cub in a white hue.
Climbing a tree is one of the first things a Black Bear cub will learn after spending a long winter in the den where its mother has cared for it. At this time, a cub weighs between 7 and 49 kilograms and the mother will care, protect and teach her cub the ways of the wilderness before they are sent out to fend for themselves at the approximate age of 17 months.
Throughout Yellowstone National Park, there are approximately 500-600 Black Bears where they feed on grasses, roots, berries, plants, small rodents and the carcasses of animals. As cute as the cub seems mingling amongst the branches on a tree, the mother is not far away and it is never wise to be between an adult Black Bear and its cub.
