This is not a sight people want to see due to the destruction it can cause but when Mother Nature takes over forcing a volcano to erupt, the sight of it is unbelievable. Red hot embers explode from the East Pond Vent in Pu'u Oo Crater on the Big Island, Hawaii as lava flows across the landscape changing its appearance forever.
Since January 3rd, 1983, the erupting cinder/spatter cone volcano know as Pu'u Oo has been active making it the longest-lived rift-zone eruption over the last 2 centuries. After 25 years, the lava which flowed from the Pu'u Oo Crater on the Big Island, Hawaii had finally appeared to stop but 14 days later, fresh lava was seen at the bottom of the crater. The Pu'u Oo Crater sank over 350 feet in a two period period and one can still hear the loud noises below as the lava splatters on the bottom of the crater.
As of January, 2007, the lava from this volcano has destroyed 189 buildings and 8.4 miles of highway and added 9.7 miles of new shoreline to the Big Island. The Pu'u Oo Crater is located in Hawaii Volcano National Park but visitors should check ahead before going as some parts of the area is closed at times due to the new activity from a volcano.
Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii, USA has been one of the biggest tourist attractions in the state and as the lava flows again, an increase of visitors has been seen.
