As a commercial crab fishing boat fights its way through the waves during a winter storm on the Bering Sea in Alaska, USA, the bow and the top of the wheelhouse become blanketed in ice. The Silver Spray is one of many in a fleet of commercial fishing vessels which head out for days or weeks at a time during the Opilio Tanner crab fishing season.
The best times of year to be crab fishing is from October to January with some of the Opilio fishing lasting until May. Alaska is one of the most successful places in the world for these commercial fisherman where 4 species of King Crabs are caught, along with the Opilio (Snow Crab), Bairdi (Tanner Crab) and the Dungeness. The Red King Crab is the most rewarding along with the Blue King Crab, the Golden King Crab and the Scarlett King Crab.
Commercial crab fishing is one of the highest paid jobs throughout the world, but one of the hardest which many do not survive. The bitterly cold winter temperatures bring about many a storm and many fishermen have drowned, died from hypothermia or come home with crippling injuries working with the equipment.
The equipment used by these commercial fishermen is already heavy but when the traps are fully loaded with crab and getting blocked by large chunks of ice when the Bering Sea freezes over, the work becomes three times as hard. Tens of thousands of dollars can be made each winter while crab fishing in the Bering Sea, but it takes a certain type of person to be able to outlive each winter storm in Alaska, USA.
