A bee sits atop a flower on a thistle plant in Centennial Valley, Montana, where it spends some time feeding on the nectar and pollen. With their long proboscis, they can easily get the nectar from the flower which many other species of herbivorous animals have a hard time doing on the thistle flower. The sharp prickles surrounding the flower is a deterrent for many.
The nectar the bee is feeding on is a main source of energy while the pollen is filled with protein and other nutrients which can be fed to the larvae. A bee is an important part of the ecosystem as they pollinate flowering plants which one third of the human food supply relies on.
Bees must always be on the look out when feeding on nectar from the various flower species, as some contain spiders or bugs which wait patiently to capture them.
