In the Arctic climates along the Denali Highway in Alaska, USA, the Bearberry and Lowbush Cranberry tangle themselves around each other as they grow, creating a beautiful picture.
The Bearberry is very well adapted to the Arctic weather and grows to be between 10 and 30 centimeters high. During the Autumn, the leaves often turn red and produce dark purple to black colored berries with a display of white flowers.
The Lowbush Cranberry or Lingonberry plant emerges through the leaves of the Bearberry and produces red berries which are edible. The berries from this shrub are very rarely cultivated but many collect these berries when in the wild. The Lowbush Cranberry can also be recognized as a cowberry, foxberry, mountain cranberry, red whortleberry, partridgeberry around the Newfoundland and Cape Breton regions and the redberry in Labrador.
