The barren landscape in Nikolai consists of dead spruce trees which have their roots and trunks buried beneath the snow along the Iditarod National Historic Trail in Alaska, USA. As the sun shines on a winter day, the surface of the snow sparkles in the lighting as the moss grows off the barren branches on the trees.
The Idiatord National Historic Trail spans from Seward to Nome, Alaska and most people know this route and the name as it relates to the annual sled dog racing event. This trail has an enormous amount of history with sections dating back thousands of years to the Alaska Natives who used it for trade routes.
During the winter, the Spurce trees stand alone as the snow builds up in preparation for the sled dog teams who pass through Nikolai, Alaska during March.
