A Bald Eagle is a portrait of strength and power which one can easily see in this picture taken at sunset in Homer, Alaska in the USA. The sunset lighting glistens off the ruffled plumage on the Bald Eagle's head where his yellow irises reflect the light and his vibrant colored hooked beak prominently stands out.
The Bald Eagle uses its massive beak to kill and handle prey along with their large talons and small spikes on their feet. When the Bald Eagle opens its beak, there is a sharp edge on the inside upper part located behind the hook. When the upper and lower parts of the beak close together, they easily slice tough skin just the way scissors do.
The beak is made of keratin which is also what nails and hair on humans is made of and is something that continuously grows. It is manicured naturally by Bald Eagles in the wild but when in captivity, it must be trimmed down.
The Bald Eagle is the national bird and symbol of the USA and finds the area around Homer, Alaska to be an ideal location for foraging, perching, nesting and soaring.
