The stillness of the Beaufort Sea off the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, USA, reflects the picturesque display of the Aurora borealis spanning the sky at sunset. A white and pink glow arcs over the horizon as a green curtain of lights blankets the twinkling stars which appear by the dozens as darkness settles in after sunset.

During the daylight hours, the Aurora borealis is almost impossible to see and their beauty does not fully explode until the Alaskan sky takes on its night appearance. Slowly floating across the surface of the Beaufort Sea are small pieces of ice which slowly melt as the temperatures around the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge begin to warm up.

This natural phenomenon can be seen on any given night, sometimes for hours at a time while at other moments, they are very short lived.
