As the moon shines across the surface of the Beaufort Sea off the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, USA, the Aurora borealis creeps out from behind the hills and displays its beauty across the sky. Curtains of bright green lights dance across the sky on a clear night as millions of stars sparkle from the depths of the universe.
This natural phenomenon is a fairly common sight during the fall and spring in Alaska, as the sky becomes darker than during the long summer days. They still appear during the summer, but become harder to see when the sun stays awake for longer periods of time.
The Aurora borealis can appear in a variety of colors which include red, green, blue and violet but on this particular night over the Beaufort Sea near the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, their beauty is made up of green hues.
