Arctic Ocean Northern Lights Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

The glow of the moon shines across the tranquil surface of the Arctic Ocean off the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, USA as the Northern Lights dance across the sky.

Stars twinkle across the sky over the Arctic Ocean as curtains of magical lights known as the Northern Lights, make their appearance known. The horizon is aglow in pink hues from the brightness of the moon which highlights the serene waters off the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Clear nights like in this picture are spectacular for the Northern Lights especially during the fall and spring when they seem to appear on a more regular basis. During the summer, the days are very long and the sun lingers making it hard for the Northern Lights to display their beauty.

This picture shows the green and yellow hues of the Northern Lights which can also be seen in red, blue and violet. From the coastal shores of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, one can sit for hours in the moon light and watch this natural phenomenon perform its magic.
