Autumn has brought in early signs of winter and blanketed the tundra in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska with a coat of snow leaving this Arctic Ground Squirrel searching for food. The main source of food for this tiny animal is various plants where seeds, berries, willow leaves, mushrooms, grasses and flowers can be found.
After this Arctic Ground Squirrel has found enough food, it will store it in its burrow, where it will hibernate from September to April. On awakening, the food supply which was stored will be enough for the squirrel until the landscape has begun to flourish with new growth.
