The Dalton Highway, James W. Dalton Highway or the Haul Road in Alaska, USA, is one which spans across the Arctic Coastal Plain towards the Prudhoe Bay Oilfields. The highway directly parallels the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System and is one of the most deserted roads in Alaska as it is mainly used for trucks.
The Dalton Highway extends for 414 miles, starting just north of Fairbanks and ending near the Arctic Ocean where the Prudhoe Bay oilfields are located. Along the highway, there are only three towns; Coldfoot, Wiseman and Deadhorse, all of which only have between 10 and 25 permanent residents.
Approximately 160 trucks travel the Dalton Highway across the Arctic Coastal Plain during the summer and about 250 during the winter. At the end of the highway's terminus, private roads weave in and out of the area which are owned by the Prudhoe Bay oilfield companies.
