Two cute little birds known as American Goldfinch sit on a bare branch in Texas Hill Country in Comfort, Texas, one protecting its feeding site from the other. These birds are also referred to as Eastern Goldfinch or Wild Canaries which belong to the finch family.
Growing to about 4-5 inches in length and weighing between .39 to .71 ounces, a female is a dull brown coloring throughout most of the year changing slightly during the summer while the male is bright yellow in the summer and an olive hue during winter. Feeding in open spaces such as fields, meadows, orchards and gardens where weeds are plentiful, the American Goldfinch birds can become fairly aggressive towards each other during breeding season.
During the nest building, the male American Goldfinch will fight off any other male birds which try to move in on their territory with the females responding the same way to other female birds. Once the females have laid their eggs, this aggressive behavior stops.
This picture shows one of the birds squawking or alarm calling at another trying to defend its territory.
