Yellowstone National Park is filled with wildlife and the American Black Bear is a common species found roaming free throughout the wilderness. In this picture, an adult American Black Bear stops to have a look at the disturbance near by to ensure there is no signs of any danger.

The black bear in Yellowstone National Park usually has a black fur coat and a brown nose but there are eastern populations which show some brown, blond or cinnamon hues to their coloring. The American Black Bear grows to about 2-3 feet in height, 4-7 feet in length and a male can weigh up to 600 pounds with the female species being a fair bit smaller.

As this bear makes his way through the wilderness, he will stop to feed on plants, fruits, nuts, insects, honey, salmon, small animals or carrion. If they are extremely hungry they will prey on young deer or moose calves. The American Black Bear is only found in North America and is the smallest of three species.

Yellowstone National Park has 1,100 miles of trails to follow where the wildlife is plentiful. There are approximately 500-600 Black Bears in Yellowstone National Park and can often be seen around the Tower area, Blacktail plateau and the Lamar Valley.
