Within Alaska's Native peoples population there eleven distinct cultures. These indigenous native people of Alaska include the Inupiaq, St Lawrence Island Yupik, Yupik, Cupik, Aleut, Alutiiq plus Native American peoples such as those from the Haida, Tlingit, Eyak, Tsimshian, and the Athabaskan. Many of these cultures are further divided into tribes.
Each culture occupies different regions of Alaska which is partly based on their relationship to the land or sea which forms an important part of their survival. The Inupiaq and St Lawrence Island Yupik occupy the north and north west of Alaska as they continue to subsist on the land and sea of that area. The Athabascan cultural group traditionally rely on the river systems and wildlife of the interior for their survival. Yup'ik and Cup'ik cultures settled in the Yukon-Kushokwim, Bristol Bay, and Nunivak Island regions for access to traditional hunting, fishing, and gathering grounds. The maritime peoples are the Aleut and Alutiiq while the Native American cultures occupy the south central and southeast of Alaska.
