A cygnet swims behind its adult mother in the Copper River Delta in Cordova, Alaska where it will learn to fend for itself in the wilderness.
The adult Trumpeter Swan is very proud as it slowly makes its way through the water with the cygnet in tow, which was capable of swimming within two days. After almost two weeks, a cygnet is capable of feeding itself and the adult Trumpeter Swan will start to give its chick a little more space when she is confident her cygnet is more independent. The young Trumpeter Swan will not be able to take flight until it is approximately three or four months old.
