On the road towards McCarthy/Kennecott in Alaska, USA, travelers will pass by an old abandoned cabin located in Wrangell St. Elias National Park which was once used daily during the 1900's when the copper mines were booming. From the interior of the cabin, one can look through the broken window to the beauty of the landscape where the wildflowers blossom during the summer.
After many years, the windows have given away or been broken but the abandoned cabin still stands strong in the wilderness of the park. There are many historic places to explore while driving this gravel road through Wrangell St. Elias National Park, the abandoned cabin being one of them.
The cabin gives one an idea of how people once lived near McCarthy/Kennecott, a place which nearly became a ghost town after 1938 when the copper supplies disappeared. Approximately 50 people still reside in McCarthy but becomes a busy destination during the summer where Alaskan history is relived.
